DC Circulator - EAST OF THE RIVER !!! Finally

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray; D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown; Councilmembers Marion Barry (Ward 8), Tommy Wells (Ward 6) and Yvette Alexander (Ward 7); and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Terry Bellamy today launched a new D.C. Circulator route, the first to ever provide service east of the Anacostia River. The new route runs from the Potomac Avenue Metro Station to Skyland and the Good Hope Marketplace Shopping Center via Barracks Row.

“When you provide better transit service and improve mobility, there are a host of benefits – not the least of which is better access to jobs,” said Mayor Gray. “This new route connects these communities east of the River - where jobs are scarce - with the employment centers across the District.”

The Potomac Avenue Metro to Skyland via Barracks Row route will complement existing Metrobus routes with fast, limited-stop service bridging the Anacostia River. Passengers paying with a SmarTrip card will be able to travel from Skyland to anywhere the Circulator travels in the District, including Georgetown and Union Station, for just $1.00.

“The D.C. Circulator’s low fare, convenient schedule and unique styling make it a very attractive and popular way to get around,” said Director Bellamy. “In fact, more than 500,000 people ride Circulator buses every month now, and we’re confident that number will go up now that we can provide service to more neighborhoods. We welcome this new route to the Circulator family today and look forward to serving new customers.”

The route will initially run from 6 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday, and will serve the following stops in Wards 6, 7, and 8:

Winter Hours (October 1-March 31) - Weekdays 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

Summer Hours (April 1-September 30) - Weekdays 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturdays 7 a.m.-9 p.m.

In addition to making stops at the Anacostia, Eastern Market and Potomac Avenue Metro stations, the new route will also connect to six Capital Bikeshare stations. For more specific information about Capital Bikeshare, visit www.capitalbikeshare.com.

In developing this route, DDOT held four public meetings with residents and interested stakeholders to solicit input on the proposed route and stop locations. The final route takes into consideration comments received from these community meetings as well as a community survey.

 

Please note: The route as shown included a detour on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE and past the Anacostia Metro Station that was necessitated by construction on the 11^th Street Bridge Project. DDOT plans to close the 13^th Street ramp to the inbound bridge later this year, and the buses had to be rerouted to navigate around the planned closure. The detour route is longer and DDOT is exploring options to obtain 2 more buses so the Circulator can maintain 10-minute headways.
